review 1: Elizabeth Crook, who lives is Austin, as do I, writes a compelling novel about the tragic shootings by Charles Whitman from the Texas Tower on the University of Texas campus n the 1960s. Shelly is one of Whitman's victims. She forms a bond with another victim that has ramifications for the rest of her life. Although the book seems melodramatic at times with too many coincidences, we forget that life can be like that. A compelling read.
review 2: This book really evoked the atmosphere of Austin and The University of Texas in the late 60s. It was a great story and the characters were fantastic. They seemed so real - I really want to know what else happened to them after the book ended. My only complaint is that it has ruined me for the average book out now that
... more is not nearly as well written. Some history, some romance, lots of family dynamics - just a great read. Much of it was very vivid to me because I live in the area and could visualize the places described - I don't know how a reader who had never been to Texas would respond to those descriptions. less

Sappy. Not worth reading past chapter one (AKA the excerpt published in Texas Monthly magazine).
