review 1: Jasmine Fahroodhi is a college dropout who has no plans on furthering her education. Ever since she was a little girl, her parents has instilled in her knowledge and tips on how to survive in life. Although she is thankful for them, she sometimes wishes they disappeared. Things turn from sour to worst, when her father arranges a marriages for her. Despite her attempts to get him to change his mind, he is convinced that he is going to find the perfect man for his daughter. Jasmine looks up to her Father more than her worrisome mother who only obeys his demands. Jasmine starts to wonder about the relationship her mother shares with her father, and rather it is legit as it seems. Jasmine must face her inner struggles if she chooses to ignore her Father wishes. It is complicat... moreed to get her Father's mind but that does not mean that she is going to stop trying. Not even if her mother gives her critical advice, it is not going to be enough to readjust her life to fit their wishes. This was a huge surprise of a novel, it was funny, lively characters and a good ending. However I felt that I got to know too much of the Father background and not the main character. Although he plays a role in the book, I wanted to know more about Jasmine and less about him. That was a minor flaw in this book, the rest was pretty decent.
review 2: I wanted to like this book. I really did. There were many flaws I was able to take in stride, but one I just couldn't. The main character's immigrant father speaks broken English. He's been stateside since he was 20, and is presumably in his 50s or so in the book. He's been through medical school and is a successful doctor. But he speaks broken English after 30 years in the country? I just don't buy it - especially not for a medical doctor. Every time I read his dialogue, I was jarred out of the book.Am I just being naive? Would a doctor in a small town be able to make it if he didn't have a fine control of the language? less
