review 1: I read this book in around 3 hours, then proceeded to start again from beginning to end and I don't think it will be boring no matter how many times I read it. It was that awesome. Honestly, I did not have any high expectations for this book. And when such a book creates such a great impact, I think that there is nothing more wonderful. Seriously. It is such books that redeem my belief in exploring and reading stuff that I normally won't. The plot is simple. It follows four people at a performing arts school where talent is exceedingly abundant and competition is stiff. I loved Ethan, Emme, Carter and Sophie. Ok, that's a lie. I hated Sophie. But she was an excellent example of what can happen when you forget the people around your and your relationships in order to get to... more the top. I liked how each of the characters develop in their own ways in the book (except for Sophie of course) but yes, I would have liked to see Sophie change too. But I do feel that she will fall due to her actions and maybe then, she will realise what is truly important. Another thing that will always stick with me is the friendship between Emme, Ethan, Ben and Jake. It was great to see them support each other and have each others' back.So yes, this book was totally awesome and now i just want to go and read it again!
review 2: In this one by Elizabeth Eulberg, we follow four talented teenagers from their initial auditions to enter the New York City High School of Creative and Performing Arts through to their Senior Year and finally Graduation. The personalities of this story include the famous child actor, Carter, his fame-aspiring singing girlfriend, Sophie, her oldest friend, lyricist and musician, Emme and fellow band member, lead singer/ guitarist Ethan. Found the beginning to be a tad weary but it gets quite good after the initial introductions to the main four characters (so hang in there). Really liked the supporting characters, especially the 'Teenage Kicks' band that Emme and Ethan are part of with the leader of the group, comedic drummer Jack and sassy, bassist Ben. Intrigued by 'The Incident' that is gradually revealed by Eulberg's excellent transitions into the past for added depth of understanding about relationships and histories. Found that the teenagers each had clear voices that distinguished them from each other, making four unique threads in the story. They were also relate-able so that the reader easily becomes emotionally invested in them while following the grueling year with Opening day performance, Senior showcase, gigs, college auditions and studio recordings. You become a bit of a cheerleader too for those that deserve a happy ending while becoming frustrated with others that are egotistical and manipulative. Found myself tearing up (surprisingly) a bit for my two favourite characters. A shorter but still sweet story about teens growing the confidence to form their own identity and beginning the path to their future. Was also balanced neatly with managing real relationships with their friends and family. Impressed by Eulberg's easy way of writing that made this story a breeze to read, despite one particularly horrifyingly mean character. A well deserved and fitting ending too. less
