review 1: A modern take on Jane Austen's famous 'Pride and Prejudice' by Elizabeth Eulberg set in the affluent Connecticut Longbourn Academy for girls and the drama that ensues around the long-standing tradition of prom with the neighbouring Pemberley Academy for boys. It is clear from the start of the direct parallels with the old time classic with the recognisable character names as well as social class divisions between the main girl, Lizzie Bennett and her music scholarship entry to this school with teenagers who have been born into privileged, wealthy families. Subjected their disdain and hazing, she at least has friends in her fellow scholarship student, Charlotte and kind roommate Jane who is involved with the equally nice Charles Bingley. We have Jane's socially inappropriat... moree younger sister in Lydia, Charles' twin sister, Caroline who causes trouble and bad first-impression-making but well-intentioned Will Darcy. Of course the story can't progress without the charismatic villain, George Wickham who is the well-known, kicked-out-of-Pemberley scholarship kid. Eulberg writes fluently and finished this story with just over an hour of reading. Pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment in this spin-off especially with the LOL thanks to the sweet sister, Georgiana, teasing Jane and Java Junction barista co-worker, Tara. Liked the ski cottage trip, actual-surprise (though shouldn't have been retrospectively) involving Claudia Reynolds as well as other modern-day derivations from the Austen original. A super fast, light-hearted treat if you aren't wanting anything profound or want the Austen story with present-day flair
review 2: Cute idea!!! P & P at an exclusive boarding school for the American Wealthy and swap out the goal of marriage for Prom. This is not the first YA version of P & P. But It is the shortest. I really liked the modern telling and most of the changes. My only complaint--dialogue between students was odd. This was surprising; usually Ms. Eulberg is usually right in tune with youth lingo. Not so much in this book. less
