review 1: Privileged Wally Baker grew up in Brooklyn Heights. As the story opens, V-J Day is being celebrated and she hopes her father who has been serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theatre, will soon be home. Her mother has followed in the family tradition of the females and is a doctor and they have taken in a boarder, Mr. Niederman. Wally's best friend is Ham, son of her grandparent's black maid, Loretta. Ham has introduced Wally to the world of ants and stimulated in her a desire to be an entomologist. The novel explores various secrets as it unfolds through the lives and deaths of those close to Wally, some of which she only understands much later in life. An interesting discussion of the life of ants and other insects, along with the very human conundrums that both chil... moredren and adults face.
review 2: I loved this book, loved the characters, didn't want it to end.Wally is nine on VJ Day at the end of World War II. She is the daughter of Stella, who is a doctor and granddaughter of Gigi who is also a doctor. Her dad is serving in the Navy overseas. The story wends it's way through Wally's life from the time she is nine until she gives birth to her own daughter. This is a richly woven story and I highly recommend it! less

The book was an OK read, but I couldn’t really identify with the characters and her writing style.
