review 1: This is one of those blog to books venture. Somehow, after reading the book, I feel that I like the blog much more due to availability to more stories. Having said that, I shouldn't take away from the compilation of this book.Though usual suspects such as Joan of Arc, Mata Hari, Cleopatra are definitely included, there are some incredible portraits of few other interesting women as well.Emilie du Chatelet, a learned woman, who was almost always known as Voltaire's mistress, Eleanor of Aquitaine (also portrayed in the movie Lion in the Winter), who was married to King Henry II of England and two of her sons would be future kings of England, Billie Holiday, Isadora Duncan, Frieda Kahlo, Lady Hestor Stanhope, famous traveler to middle east, Margaret Tobin Brown, survivor of ... moreTitanic, Josephine Baker, trying to eke out a living in Paris of 1920s by presenting alluring African enchantments, Anna Leonowens, who was the royal governess to King of Siam, modern day Singapore (immortalized in the musical The King and I and TV show Anna and the king). Book is often objective enough to ferret out the truths and myths/perceptions concocted - for example about Matahari and Calamity Jane. It is a good read of profile of some interesting women.
