review 1: OH MY GOSH. While I am overfamiliar with this woman's work, and thus prone to notice every flaw, I couldn't put this down. I am so glad she has written something else set in this world. She has added detail and nuance to the religio-magical elements of the dreamhunter duet and created a character I am weirdly in love with (this happens alot). intrigued by her continued avoidance of Maori culture, especially as in this novel she looks at a pseudo pacific island culture (though not in any huge depth - probably for the best as she rather lacks first hand experience and "speaking for" is kinda gross) whilst never mentioning any tagata whenua for her parallel New Zealand.
review 2: After reading Mortal Fire, I had some mixed feelings. And it wasn't because of the en
... moreding. It was a well written book but there was some parts where I was confused. Some parts in the book (very few) were confusing and hard to understand. A few of those moments were caused by lacking vocabulary and a few were caused by a over abundance of vocabulary. I rated the book four stars because the content, in my opinion, was full of creativity and had a lot of thought. It even went in deeper in some topics making you feel like you were right along side the characters. In the beginning when canny's mother stood up for her (when it was unnecessary) you could see her personality. The author also dived into other personalities like sholto and Susan and the most personality shown was canny. The book was also a fantastic mystery. As you read, the story developed along side of the characters and that allowed you to sit back and watch the story get to its climax. An over all thought about the book is that it was remarkable but still had a few flaws. I would recommend it to any one who likes magic or mystery that will keep you turning the pages till the end. less
