review 1: Fierce is too tame a word for this oman! Caterina -- pregnant and on her own -- staves off the entire College of Cardinals, preventing the election of the next pope, in order to ensure she gets to keep her lands. If you can keep track of the various Italian family alliances and feuds (at times it feel like there should be an app for that), this is a fascinating read about one of the strongest women in history.
review 2: Caterina Sforza is a woman who defies easy classification. Her father ensured that she received the same education as her brothers, including training in swordsmanship. ... moreance. She proved herself a capable ruler and a fearless warrior. She fell in love with a stable boy. She married a Medici. She bested Machiavelli. And she was raped and imprisoned by a Borgia. She died penniless and abandoned by the sons she fought so hard to protect. Elizabeth Lev does a fantastic job of presenting Caterina Sforza in all her contradictions. Not only does Lev offer a meticulously detailed account of the facts of Caterina’s life, but she also provides the context necessary to understand the ways in which this woman was a product of her age, and the ways in which she was extraordinary. less
