review 1: A very intimate look at the life of a Rennaisance woman. She was bound by the laws of men but took feminism to new heights; even by today's standards. She was engaged at age 10 and married at 11; to a man who had little talent and few scruples. She was adored by one Pope for her piety, her wit and her wisdom but was betrayed by another Pope and by both family and "friends". She was exposed to some of the most incredible art and artists of all time and she influenced the artists as much as they influenced her. Having been to Italy, I could picture the many places she visited and lived. I wish I had read this book before going to Italy, as it would have made the trip even more enjoyable.
review 2: This book made my slight interest in Caterina blossom into f... moreull-fledged idolizing love. I am so sad that there are not a million movies about her. I'm in awe of everything she accomplished under the restraints of her time for a woman. I especially loved her relationships with her children, even though her oldest son was kind of an idiot. I loved that Giovanni de Medici grew up to be a man who would've made her immensely proud.The only thing keeping this book from getting five stars is how virulently anti-Borgia it was. I understand a negative attitude toward the Borgias, but I would've appreciated more than THEY'RE ALL EEEEEEVIL. I mean, we've gotten that for 500 years. It's just not interesting, and my fondness for Cesare and Lucrezia makes is a little difficult for me to take such a one-dimensional, cardboard-cutout-evil-villain depiction of their family seriously. less
