review 1: Elizabeth Moon continues to provide quality fantasy reading, this continuation of the Paksenarrion series, or as i like the call them, the Paks side effects, is a awesome read bringing more characters into their own, for no doubt future development in their own series, and continue support for the main characters in a profound way. My reading appetite for Moon's book are way to voracious for the rate at which they put these books out, but hey, its good to wait, plus, i read these books over and over again from start to finish, just that good of a read.
review 2: I don’t know if fantasy authors assume their books are the only ones their readers ever pick up, but too many of them seem to think that all we do is wait breathlessly for their next installment, and
... morein the meantime, re-read the earlier volumes over and over again. This belief allows them to a) not include any kind of synopsis or sketch of the characters and plot so far; and b) not bother with a map of the unfamiliar world upon which the series is set. The result is that a reader who has actually read other books in the year (or years) since the publication of the last volume winds up going through the first 100 pages with a series on unanswered questions in her head: “Who’s that character again?” “Where is the castle?” “Is this an enemy, a friend or an unknown?”For example, Elizabeth Moon’s long-running series about a pre-industrial world rife with magic, elves, demons and plenty of real-world politics and betrayal can’t really be appreciated without knowing the backstory. Unfortunately, in “Limits of Power” (Del Rey, $26, 492 pages), Moon won’t deign to give readers a synopsis, much less a complete map. There is a list of names at the start of the book, but there’s no hint of the relationships between them, and it took me a couple hundred pages to really settle in.Once that happened, “Limits of Power” lived up to Moon’s high standards, and the nicely drawn characters and convoluted plot kept the pages turning. The good guys might be a little too good, but that’s hardly a fatal flaw in this kind of book, and I look forward to the conclusion of the series – which appears to be two or three more books down the road. less
