review 1: First published in 1899, so can be challenging for modern reader, but"... how can you make a person happy against his will? You can knock a great deal into him in the way of learning and what the schools call extras, but if you try for ever you will not knock any happiness into a being who has not got it in him to be happy. The only result probably would be tha you knock your own out of yourself...:
review 2: Beautiful, beautiful writing! Only 3 things I regret: 1) apparently this was the sequel to a previous book, which I wish I had read first, 2) the book really should be read sitting outside under a tree in the summer, not on a business trip to Albuquerque in November, and 3) there was a terribly discordant judgmental passage in the book about children born ... moreout of wedlock, but I suppose Von Arnim was a product of her time and I shouldn't be too surprised. less
