review 1: I guess after reading multi-generational novels such as Sarum and Rome, I was looking for a lot more out of this book. Each generation owning Ashenden Park really only got a brief scene or two-nothing in depth that made me care about the people or their lives. It was more a story of the actual stone house itself and how it looked throughout time. The author's bio says she has written over 20 books on interior design and architecture and that sort of nonfiction writing style is evident in this book.
review 2: The book is supposed to be about the house, but the house was just a backdrop for the people who lived in and around it. The stories were well written and interesting to me but there was some passion missing from author. Maybe it would have been bette... morer if the house had stayed in one family through the ages instead of passing from one owner to another. I would read another work of fiction from this author. less
