review 1: I was drawn to reading this book because I have read the Bell Jar several times as well as some of Plath's poetry. I know about Sylvia's darker days, but as a young woman it was great for me to learn about her summer in New York that was the basis for her best-selling novel. First of all, this book was beautifully written. Every page had descriptions of perfume, fashion and food. Winder painted a beautiful picture of Sylvia's life. It was great to hear different perspectives on Sylvia's whimsical though often, melancholic nature. The imagery Winder used to describe all of the beautiful things surrounding her month in July hearkened to Sylvia's attachment to worldly possessions. If you have any interest in studying feminism and femininity in this particular time period or a... moreny interest in Sylvia Plath, I would highly recommend this book!!!
review 2: An interesting take at nonfiction--a poetic, scrapbook-like re-creation of the month Sylvia Plath spent in New York working as a guest editor at Mademoiselle during June 1953. I found the interviews of the other 19 guest editors that worked and lived with Plath at the Barbizon Hotel to be very interesting, but what really bothered me was that much of the book is written from a speculative perspective, as in Plath only wrote ONE journal entry about her experience in New York. I think this point should have been stated from the beginning. If anything, the book encourages readers to read Plath's journals and correspondence. less

An interesting read, though the dual focus on 50s culture and Plath's life sometimes muddles things.
