review 1: It's like a really bad cross between Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, and The Mortal Instruments- except it leaned mostly toward the Fifty Shades style of repetitive boringness- I think sex scenes were added just to break up the reminders of how "goth" Riley Poe is, and how she's suuuuuuuch a bad ass. Did I mention she's goth? Oh yeah, she's goth...The entire book is spent reminding us of how goth she is, how hot she is and how bad ass she is because of her twisted youth.... But, despite her excessive vampire training, her awesome bad ass-ness, her goth-ness, her big tattoos, and a whole book devoted to repeating this over and over and over.... she was taken out in the first five seconds of the big fight scene..... By the way... Did you know she's goth? So goth. Like, the m... moreost gothly of all goths. Not at all my cup of tea, but maybe someone elses. PS- she's goth. Super goth. And a bad ass, don't forget that.... PPS- Riley Poe is goth.... In case you forgot.. And she has tattoos.. And dresses goth. Goth goth goth goth goth...... Goth
review 2: I'm giving this a 4 star, but it's more like a 3 1/2 for me.I enjoyed this first book in the Dark Ink Chronicles. I like that Riley Poe is a tattoo artist, trying to make her life better for herself and her 15 year old brother. I like that she was a troubled teen herself, and wants to prevent her brother from making the same mistakes she made. I thought the way she was introduced to the "otherworld" was pretty good too. So, if I liked all of that, what's up with the 3 1/2 stars? Well, first I didn't love how back and forth she was on her feelings for Eli. One moment she is totally on board with a relationship, then she wants him to go and give her space. A little annoying. Then was her whole "I can take care of myself" tough-girl attitude. There is a point where you have to face the fact that you are the weakest being in the room, even if you don't like it. She never really does. To the point that she made some dumb decisions at the end. While I got it, and even admired it in the beginning of the book, at the end it left me frustrated with her character. But, even so, I did enjoy this book overall. And I acknowledge that this is the first book of a series. I rarely love a first book. I liked this one enough that I definitely want to continue on to see where the author takes them.Would I reread this book? PossiblyWould I recommend this book to a friend? Yes less
