review 1: Thank you for giving me this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaways. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to review it!I actually *loved* this book. I mean, as romance novels go, it was actually good. The characters were well developed and their motivations and actions seemed very much in character throughout the novel. I actually cared what happened to them and hearing about their backstories really made the characters. In some stories, hearing the back story is kind of just filler, but in this book it really mattered. There was an actual plot and it was fairly interesting. And the writing had enough heart and humor that I laughed out loud at some parts, especially when Oliver's discussing reading romance novels. I love when authors can laugh at themselves :)It's no high lite... morerature but you shouldn't be expecting that from a romance novel. For what it is, it's great and rises way way *way* above other ones I've read in this genre. If you're looking for easy smut, though, this is not for you. You'll be disappointed if you're just looking for sex.
review 2: This short book was long on issues. It dealt with so many difficult topics. The heroine of the story is Julia, a high school counselor. She has a bad habit of trying to fix people even though it is really a result of her deep caring and compassion. The hero, Deacon, is 4 years her junior and was a senior during Julia's first year as counselor. He has lots of issues. He came from dysfunctional family. His father was a drunk. When his mother died when he was 12, he and his younger brother, at 2, were fostered out. Deacon had a natural gift for basketball. That's how he made it through school even though he totally could not read. He forced his brother to accept a college scholarship for basketball where he was verbally and physically abused by his coach. So many issues...A really good book though. The reader gets to see these characters struggle to make a satisfying life for themselves. Julia and Deacon fall in love but he cannot accept that she will agree to take him as he is, illiterate. There are other equally important issues which I haven't mentioned here. A really good read and a really good HEA. less

The romance felt stiff and flat. The hero's deep insecurities eventually put me off.

Loved the hero's struggle with dyslexia. A little frustrated with heroine's myopia.

Good book, but I did not like the ending.
