review 1: A bombing in Bali shatters the lives of locals, inputs and tourists alike. A year later Jamie returns to Bali for an official anniversary ceremony. She needs closure as do others in order to move on. The experience is overwhelming, but she stays so she can search for Gabe, the inpat who had rescued her after the bombing. The horrific story of the bombing unfolds as the survivors remember the day and those they lost. The characters happen upon one another just before and after the time of the bombing and unwittingly again at the anniversary ceremony. The story is told in a circular fashion--the plot moving back and forth from the time of the bombing and the present and around and around to various secondary characters that have interacted with Jamie and Gabe.A poignant ... morestory that is emotionally overwhelming. A tale of survivor guilt, remorse, renewal, possibilities, and moving on. I could hardly get through it, and I could not put it down.
review 2: The writing is fine. A story line that is in our memories of the dreadful terroist bombings in Bali are fresh. The author does a credible job putting us back there with a series of flashbacks and adds the layer of a blooming romance that ends because Miguel leaves his girlfriend who has just rejected his marriage proposal. "I just need a drink," were his last words to her. And the club he enters blows to smithereens. Not only is she, Jamie, injured physcially but emotionally. Wrought with guilt over his death, a year later she returns to try to resolve her burden and to revisit the man who helped her heal. And btw, he (Gabe) has his own trauma that he has been trying to resolve. But somehow tragedy does bond people and he has never quite forgotten Jamie. And she, on the other hand, doesn't know what she feels for him but after their close connection she left abruptly leaving only a note.So the suspense is how the personal realtionship will be resolved. Or not.Decent read but predictable. And a bit repetitive with all her burdens. less
