review 1: The Street Sweeper is a prime example of trying to do too much in one book. Elliot Perlman combines the stories of two depressed men: Lamont and Adam with the lessons to be learned about African-American and Jewish tragedy. Unfortunately, Perlman is not satisfied with using these two characters. He then introduces complicated sud-plots about a Polish born psychologist and a Chicago meat slaughter. And as if this were not enough, there are also story lines for Adam's colleagues, Lamont's relatives and others. Perlman hits the reader over the head with his descriptions of Holocaust atrocities and of meat slaughter. I admired his themes of memory and interconnected ness. But sometimes an author can do more with less.
review 2: It's a rare book that keeps me read
... moreing when I'm wondering why I'm reading it. But by the middle of the story I knew I was in it to the end. It's a very long book, over 600 pages, but well worth the read. The story starts out with Lamont, newly out of prison for a crime he really had no part in. He's got a job at a major hospital in New York, and is on six-months probation. He really wants to get to the six-months point and get a permanent job. The fact Lamont is African-American is significant. Then there's Jake, who's white and a history professor at Columbia University. He's pretty much given up and is about to lose his job. His girlfriend wants to have a family with him, but he doesn't have faith in himself as a husband and a father, seeing how his own father was with him.Without wanting to give anything away about the story, I will say this. This is a story about African-Americans fighting in WWII and about the Holocaust. How are they related? You'll have to read the story yourself to find out. I can also say this, this is not just another Holocaust story. I learned so much that I never knew before.Highly recommended,. less
