Neil Gaiman – The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Zaista mi je krivo što ne vidim čari ove knjige kao većina. Nikada nisam bila veliki Gejmenov fan, ali oduvek sam volela njegov smisao za humor i maštovit stil pisanja. Ta činjenica i dalje ostaje. Iskreno sam se trudila da mi se dopadne knjiga.  Nažalost, priči nedostaje pravac i emocija. Sredovečni muškarac vraća se u dom iz detinjstva da prisustvuje sahrani. Pažnju mu privlači farma na kraju puta, i tako se on priseća drugarice detinjstva Leti. Zatim, čitalac prolazi kroz niz povrataka u prošlost, kada je protagonista imao sedam godina, ali nikada stvarno ne zna šta je stvarnost, a šta plod njegove mašte.

Glavna tema je poređenje između toga kako deca vide stvari u suprotnosti sa time kako odrasli dolaze do svojih zaključaka. Način na koji Gejmen opisuje živopisne slike i sećanja vraća vas u sopstveno detinjstvo – čudovištima ispod kreveta, magičnim mestima u kojima ste zamišljali da živite, značaj prijateljstva i igre, uz potpune frustracije zbog odraslih koji vas ne shvataju ozbiljno.

Malo je toga razrešeno povodom samih likova. Gejmen je odličan pisac i radnja je izuzetno napisana, ali je falila emocija i personalizacija likova. Postoji nešto simbolično  u njegovim rečima, ali motivi iza postupaka likova ne izgledaju uverljivo. Knjiga jednostavno nije moja šoljica čaja.  Iako uživam u knjigama gde su deca naratori, ovde se ni u jednom trenutku nisam zaista unela kao u nekim drugim novelama.

Ursula je bila zaista nečuveno negativan lik, ali je ostala najupečatljivija tačka knjige. Volela sam da je mrzim, ali to je bila jedina emocija koju sam osetila u ovoj knjizi. Često sam se osetila izgubljenom u priči, ali ne na dobar način. Bila sam zbunjena jer nisam znala šta se dešava. Gejmen nije uspeo da me očara, a zamućena linija između stvarnosti i mašte me je još više odbila, jer, ili me je zbunjivala ili iritirala.

Narator je veliki ljubitelj knjiga, tako da je njegova mašta veoma intenzivna. Nažalost, nekako ima ravan glas. Gejmen ima mnogo toga da kaže za osećaj nemoći kada imaš sedam godina, ali ja jednostavno ne mogu da osetim to što protagonista oseća. Bio  je dopadljiv, ali ne i dovoljno interesantan da bi mi bilo stalo o ishodu njegove avanture ili šta god da je to bilo.

I’m sad that I haven’t felt the magic that majority has. I was never a huge fan of Gaiman but I love his sense of humor and imaginative writing style. That fact still remains. I tried really hard to like this book. Unfortunately, the story lacks direction and emotion. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He’s drawn to the farm at the end of the road, and remembers his childhood friend Lettie. Then, the reader experiences a series of flashbacks when he was 7 years old, and doesn’t really know what is reality and what fruit of narrator’s imagination.

The main theme is the comparison between how children see things in contrast with how adults deduct. The way Gaiman describes vivid images and memories take you to back to your own childhood – the monsters under the bed, the magical places you imagined to live in, the importance of friendship and the games you play together, alongside the complete frustration of adults not taking you seriously.

Little is resolved about the characters. Gaiman is an excellent writer and the plot was exceptionally written, but it lacked emotion and personalisation of the characters. There is something symbolic in his words, but the motives behind their actions didn’t seem genuine. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. Although I have enjoyed books narrated by children before, I never fully became involved in the narrator’s world the way I have in other books.

Ursula was a truly outrageous character, and she remains the highlight of the book. I loved to hate her and that was the only emotion I felt throughout this book. Often, I felt lost in the story and not in the good way. Frequently, I was confused because I didn’t know what was going on. Gaiman failed to suck me in, and the blurring line between reality and fantasy was the undoing for me, because I was either confused or irritated.

The narrator is a bookworm, so his imagination is quite intense. Sadly, he has a flat voice. Gaiman has a lot to say about the helplessness of being a seven years old, but I just couldn’t feel what protagonist was feeling. He was likable, but not interesting enough for me to care about the outcome of his adventure or whatever that was.
