review 1: The Great Migration: Journey to the North is a great book about the migration of African Americans from the South to the North. It starts with Greenfield telling her story since she was a little girl, and her father was looking for a better life so he decided to go north to Washington DC and look for a job. He left his family behind but later on sent for them, and they all became part of the "great Migration". The many poems in this book describe different characters and specially their thoughts on what they had to do in order to get a better life. They are very deep poems that me the person reading them understand the struggle that this people had to go through. The theme is perseverance from what I could get. I believe that this book must be read to children in a history... more class, specially if they are being taught about the great migration. I really love poetry so I had a very interesting time reading this book to myself.
review 2: This is a book of short poems tells stories of the journey that the author made when she was only 3 months old. This book is poems about the great migration when many African Americans left the south to come to the north pursuing a life without racism and violence. These poems tell about different people living in the south at the time. There are also water color pictures and they almost look like a real photograph. I think this would be a great book to share with elementary students. less
