review 1: Obviously there are large groups of people for whom this book would hold little interest. Non-parents, at the very least. Although actually I think there's really almost as much in here that just applies to general life as there is for parenting, as it's not just (or at all) a list of dos and don'ts. Which is of course kind of the whole point. The basic thesis is that, rather than leaning on strict rules in an attempt to create Christian kids, one should take a page from, you know, Christianity and prioritize grace over law. While exploring this idea, the authors offer reassurance that, again if one believes what Christianity is saying, one's children's ultimate fate will not be decided by their parents hard work and diligence but by God, who is probably better suited for ... morethat kind of thing anyway. So, the book offers no promises that if one does Thing X that Desired Result Y will follow (insert obligatory jab at one's best life now), it does attempt to present parenting and the parent-child relationship in a way that takes the gospel seriously, which seems like a good idea.I think there's more to unpack and think about here, but this is all you're getting.
review 2: In many ways, I loved this book. As a person who tends to veer towards legalism and striving, it was a much-needed reminder that all is grace...that parenting is not just a hard job, it's an impossible one. It is deeply comforting to know that it is God who changes the hearts of my children and my job is simply to love them and teach then about the extravagant grace of Jesus. My one complaint is that the sample conversations were long and unwieldy...and not something I could see myself using on a daily basis with my children. There were a few times, too, when they felt a little manipulative and the last thing I want to do is use the gospel of grace as a club.Overall, though, I would recommend this book to any parent who feels weighted down by all of the "dos and don'ts" of Christian parenting that are being peddled from every well-meaning tome available on the market today. less

This book, about letting grace take prevalence in parenting, is a relief.
