Mrs Jeffries
review 1: Beautiful young Arlette Banfield and her husband are hosting their annual ball when Arlette is poisoned. Fortunately, Inspector Witherspoon's inamorata Lady Cannonbury is on the scene, and is able to preserve most of the evidence before the police arrive. She helps the Inspector's loyal crew of servants and friends with the investigation, unbeknownst to him. The servants are worried about the new maid Phyllis-- will she participate in their investigation, will she tell the inspector what they're doing? All ends well in this faux-Victorian world, of course.
review 2: I love this series, this is the 29th book in it and as usual, I can't wait for the next one. The household has been a bit quiet with no new cases to solve. Betsy & Smith are awaiting the arriv
... moreal of their new little one and eveyone is a bit antsy about not doing anything. The Inspector's lady friend, Lady Ruth Cannonberry, has been invited to a dinner party of some note by a new bride and arrives to find that there is some discord there. As the dinner progresses it is obvoius to one and all that the groom's aunt and his bride are in two different camps, and as the bride goes to drink her champaigne, her face changes color and she dies. Fortunately, Lady Ruth has the presence of mind to call for the police and to try to section off the murder scece. Everyone is thinking it's a natural death, but Lady Ruth doesn't thnk so and the autopsy bears that out. Back at the Inspector's home, eveyone is happy about the new development, but they are wondering about letting the new maid in on their secret. Mrs. Jefferies decides to "feel" her out about it, but the maid is not wanting any part of it.... Everyone is wondering if Phyllis, the new maid, will be "spilling the beans" about their helping the Inspector. This had a nice twist to it & the descovery of the murderer is intersting. less
