Mrs Jeffries
review 1: The setting is Victorian England in a well to do part of London. The French instructor for a wealthy family is murdered in their garden. All signs indicate that the murderer is a boorish neighbor who was seen arguing with her. Inspector Witherspoon is assigned to the case. The inspector is well known for his ability to solve high profile cases. What the inspector does not know is that his entire household staff, headed by Mrs. Jeffries, investigates his cases and passes on information to his assistant. They can go where he can not, talking to servants and shopkeepers who might not talk to the police. Soon, it is clear that there were a number of people who would benefit from the lady's death, but who really committed the act? An easy read, cozy mystery. You will r... moreeally like the characters in the household staff. The murderer and the reason for the murder are something of a surprise, but they fit the clues. Good book.
review 2: This series is a long loved one for me. 'Mrs. Jeffries Turns the Tide' was one, a page-turner, but two, Mrs. Jeffries did turn the tide. The tide? Yes, the tide and to tell you would spoil the main thought of the novel, so I will restrain myself.Mrs. Jeffries and friends/co-workers, are handed an almost, already solved, case to investigate behind the good Inspector Witherspoon's own investigation for Scotland Yard. This is the normal doings for the Inspector's household. They give gentle aid to their beloved employer, along with his neighbor, Lady Ruth, and neighbor, Luty Belle, and her 'man' Hatchet. With gentle bribery, of the baked kind (scones, biscuits,) to the listening of gossip at the stores, and with other household employees, the crime solving comes to a fine point. With the aid of both Sherry, (Harvey's) and Constable Barnes, Mrs. Jeffries, the Housekeeper is able to transfer her findings to the Inspector. This book is a true cozy Victorian Mystery. You get the flavor of Victorian England, with tea and more. The class differences are spelled out with looks at the Feminist movement, through Lady Ruth's eyes, as well as the household beneath the stairs. Mrs. Jeffries does indeed turn the tide, of I'm going to let you find out for yourselves of what, and helps save the day and a life. The ending was quite suspense-filled and had me reading non-stop. I truly enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next one. Each book stands alone but the entire series is worthy of your reading the back-list which could keep you comfortably reading all summer! Enjoy! less
