review 1: Messy outside Art Class at Art Beast (3 and up or all ages with supervision)This book was a good read-aloud for toddlers and preschoolers. I read it is my messy outdoor art class Story Alive. I like it because of the introduction of patterns, imitation, colors and emotions. After I read this book aloud to the group I introduced the art activity by showing the kids the plastic stencils I had, the large paper (really big, heavy weighted paper) and spray bottles with liquid watercolors inside (DSS ones diluted with some water) and a couple with plain water. I talked about what stencils are (positive and negative space) a little about how graffiti artists use them. I then gave each kid a sheet of the large paper and spread out the materials and encouraged them to experiment an... mored share supplies. I also introduced a few other materials gradually to give new materials to work with and for any younger kids to experiment with (bingo dabbers and large chalk is great for under 3 year olds) for the bigger kids I offered some powdered tempera paint to incorporate into the design and how they could use towels (paper or cloth) to soak up some water from paper and make patterns. They all had a great time and enjoyed using the spray bottles of color and watching the colors mix and run over the paper surface.
review 2: A blue chameleon (feeling blue so he is blue) tries to make friends by imitating their colors and shapes. He get's discouraged until he finds another colorful chameleon friend. Using for story time and so far the children love it. It's great for a picture walk of just an interactive read-a-long. The children will call out the colors and patterns when asked, as well as the names of the chameleon's prospective friends (boot! snail! goldfish!). It worked well with my extra large story time group. less
