review 1: I really enjoyed this. But it's my type of fiction. I don't know much about the real Alice Perrers so I can't comment on the history, but from other reviews I see that Campion was trying to make her more sympathetic. At times she was the most annoying character though! I'm also not sure about using archaic word meanings (wise instead of ways). Don't be misled by the blurb on the cover though - it implies something that isn't really present in the book (in my view).
review 2: An interesting peek into the life of a women during the 1300s. Alice Salisbury marries at the tender age of 14 to a man selected by her father. Janyn Perrers is a decent man although many years older than Alice. They are happy for a brief period however a previous arrangement with the dowag
... moreer queen puts their happy life in peril. It becomes even more apparent that Alice is at the mercy of others. Her life is not her own. She is ordered about by her husband, her king, and her queen. She is separated from her child, Bella and ultimately becomes the King's mistress (hence the title of the book). Throughout the book I felt frustration because Alice had little to no voice about her life choices. less
