review 1: This book was extraordinary. Jack is so convincing, his fears and fascinations are dead on for a five year old, even a five year who has been isolated from the world since conception. When first introduced to Jack and Ma, they are confined to a single room, no windows just skylights to measure the passage of "God" i.e. the sun across the sky. Everything in the room is singular and personified for Jack - table, bed, wardrobe. Every minute is accounted for too. Just when the delineation of the routine starts to get tedious Jack and Ma are suddenly thrust back into the "outside" world. Neither Jack, no Ma, nor the reader anticipates how difficult this transition will be. But Jack proves to be resilient and his observations of his world as it widens are genuine and at ... moretimes heart breaking. At the same time as a parent I recognize the five year old mind bent on world domination...Jack is not without flaws. But that is what makes him and his story so compelling. As big and scary and difficult as the wide world is for all of us, we can and do adapt to it everyday. Remarkable writing, one of the best things I have read in a while.
review 2: Didn't care for this book. I kept listening though, and I empathized more for the mother than the child. I could understand her reasoning for wanting to commit suicide. For her own sake I wish it would've worked out for her. I also didn't like how he said he was having some when he was breastfeeding- I thought it was poor wording choice and made me think of him having sex everytime he said that. That could've been worded differently. less

Dark, unsettling, be prepared for this subject matter.
wolf_shifter
No depth. Could be because the narrator is 5.
