review 1: The Inbetween People is an illuminating novel written by Emma McEvoy, who tells the story of damaged lives tangled together. The story revolves around several major themes such as: war and the shift that takes place as cultures and people recover from such; The themes stretch across all aspects of human nature, but it is the development of self that receives the most attention. I really really enjoyed this book and found it hard to believe that this is her first novel. The writing style is beautiful, like a slowmoving dream. The language is unbelievable sensual and the story is like nothing you will ever read. It stuck with me for a while and my thoughts revolved around the characters while reading it, but after I read the last sentance - I felt like reading it again, in o... morerder to catch things, I may have missed. I for sure would recommend this book to anybody with reading taste. I am looking out for Emma McEvoys second book......with excitment!
review 2: While I appreciated the subject of this novel, I found Emma McEvoy's writing style to be distracting. Her consistent (and deliberate) omission of quotation marks in particular made it difficult for me to focus on the story line. Several times I found myself stuck in a paragraph, trying to decipher who was speaking. In addition to using technically incorrect punctuation, McEvoy further complicates her novel by using multiple narrators and rapidly shifting between the past and the present.[return][return]While creative use of punctuation, narrators, & chronology is to be applauded, in this case I believe it detracted from McEvoy's work instead of contributing to it. less

Sensitive and moving, with characters that seem all-too-real and a wonderful sense of place.
