review 1: I kept thinking that it sounded like Ms. Trevayne wrote this hoping it would be optioned for a movie. But then I thought, what's wrong with that? Her descriptions are lovely and I think a film that had dirty gray soot and glittering mechanical fairies circling street lamps would be visually exciting. The good characters are likeable and the antagonist is as nasty as they come.My only complaint is that the final climatic scene didn't seem climatic enough. The end for the villain wasn't satisfying awful. Okay, this is a kid's book so maybe it doesn't need a more gruesome end for a terrible person. On the other hand, there are innocent people being hanged because "the Lady" is in a bad mood, so it's not like the author is protecting kids from ugliness. I would have liked to h... moreave seen the action of the battle scene at the climax upped a few degrees. The antagonist caused people to lose body parts. He needed to lose a few before his final demise.
review 2: As I write this review, I'm only half-way done with this book but, oh my, is it fantastic. I couldn't even wait to finish it before reviewing. The descriptions are, as another review said, pause worthy. The imagery is mind blowing. The characters are wonderful. I've been waiting for a book like this to come along for a long time and this does not disappoint. If you ever get the chance to buy this book - for simply checking it out of a library just will not do - then don't think twice about it because this absolutely elegant.UPDATE: I have finished the book and though the ending wasn't completely satisfying, at the same time it did feel completely satisfying. It's very strange. But I don't even feel comfortable donating this book to my local library like I do other books simply because it is so amazing. I never re-read books but I may have to make an exception in the future for this one. 9.5/10. less

A middle grade steampunk fantasy...sound odd, but it actually works very well!
