review 1: Love the music (Tortelier's rendition is my favourite so far), so I was looking forward to this. Sadly, it wasn't all I'd been hoping for. Lots of biographical stuff about Bach and Casals, which feels a bit... regurgitated, and isn't offset by any well-expressed emotional stuff to match the beauty of the music. Interviews with players / experts are few and far between, and those that there are are lacklustre and don't really get to the heart of the music. Learned lots, but it sort of lacks passion, which seems odd considering the protagonists.
review 2: This book was a wonderfully interwoven story of Pablo Cassels, Bach, and the beautiful music they shared. It was wonderful to read while listening to the cello suites on spotify or something where you could try
... moredifferent versions as the author mentions them. Only complaint is he probably stretched a bit to get a chapter for each movement. Otherwise a few of the chapters could probably have been cut. But all in all very worth a read. less

Elegant prose; made me start listening to the suites again after many years of absence.

fascinating. I know enough about music to be able to follow along.

Very interesting! Must finish later when life is less chaotic...

Personal story detracts from already thin material.
