review 1: This awesome picture book is a touching story about a grandmother and her grandson creating a bond during the holidays. They are already so close and a school project given to Eric is a great opportunity for both of them to learn from one another. Children can learn about patience from this book because Eric is having to translate for his grandmother because she does not know English. Also it can teach them how to return favors. The grandmother agreed to go only if Eric made a treat with her. I'm a sucker for stories that about building relationships with family members. This story was great because I felt that the illustrations were live pictures that I could imagine happening to myself. Not only does it teach children about culture but it also teaches them about language... more and the struggles people go through to communicate.
review 2: This book is a good fit for my text set because there is an idea of a gift in the story, and this gift is art. Eric Velasquez and his grandma have a close relationship. He would go to his grandma's during the summertime and winter breaks. During this winter break, Eric had to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a project. At the museum, his grandma did not recognize anyone or anything besides the portrait of Juan de Pareja, who was a former slave turned famous painter. This portrait inspired Eric to become the artist that he is today because Juan de Pareja's history allowed for Eric to see that people of African descent are able to do big things as well. At the end of the book, his grandma gives him a sketchbook and colored pencils as a Christmas gift. This set of art supplies eventually led Eric to be an artist. This book teaches students that small things can lead to bigger, intangible things as gifts. I hope from reading this book students will learn that every deed done and every gift given is never too small and can affect others in more ways they can imagine. less
