review 1: Light, romantic, dramatic - great vacation reading, but nothing about it will stick with you. I did appreciate that it was a YA take on Heloise and Abelard, a story from French history (that actually happened) that predates Romeo and Juliet and is, in many respects, much more romantic and true. I'd love to see this explored again - the French history, the way the original romance played out, and the potential usage of supernatural elements/magical realism are worth exploring...but this book took the approach too lightly, and too dramatically, for anything to really be explored the way it could be. Still, I found myself enjoying it a lot, and I could see younger teen readers being impacted by it because of the intense true love involved.
review 2: This book h... moreas mystery, intrigue, and romance but something was just missing. I thought the story of Heloise and Abelard romance was interesting, but there was so much more the author could’ve written about them. Character wise I really liked Callie at the beginning, but then she met August and it was all about him and how he was so sexy and so perfect. I’m sorry no guy is perfect. I also don’t like when a character falls for a guy instantly on sight and then basically devotes her life to him. I guess I was just expecting more for this book. There’s some good quotes in it, but overall, it was okay. It was something light and easy to read and just turn off my brain. Oh and I really hate how rushed the ending seemed and how the author could’ve put so many more twists and characters in it and then it might be awesome instead of just okay. less
