review 1: This is a wonderful book about developing a considered identity while being taught by wonderful surrogate parents, about the importance of reading and reflection to doing so, about being a not-stereotypically attractive young woman in a male world, and about the responsibilities of leadership. Technically superb, it has many themes and messages for all young people who aspire to or, much more rarely these days, have thrust upon them, positions of leadership. It merits five stars.
review 2: The story is fun enough, but I thought that the characters often contradicted themselves and that the world doesn't make too much sense. It's set in a post-environmental disaster version of the world some few centuries in the future. While I can understand a power grid cras
... moreh, the inability to reinvent the printing press (while retaining knowledge of and ability to create sterile environments and accurate tools for rudimentary plastic surgery) seems a bit silly. The characters were fun, but not particularly special or otherwise outstanding. less
