review 1: Erin Dionne’s Notes from an Accidental Band Geek features Elsie Wyatt, who wants to become an amazing horn player just like her dad. Only, there is just one problem with that. To attend the super-selective summer music camp, Shining Birches, she has to have one other orchestra to add to her application. Elsie is a pretty average freshman, but she has dreams big, bright, and clear in her sky. After Elsie gets over the fact that marching band is not the kind of orchestra she is used to, she quickly realizes that marching band is actually pretty fun. She gets into a sort of fight with her dad because he doesn't think she can balance marching band, school work, and practicing her French horn for her big audition. You would have to read this book to find out how she either ma... morekes everything happen or make everything fall apart. This book was a little easier of a read for me, even though the main character was the same age as me. One thing I really enjoyed about this book was the fact that throughout the book I could connect bits and pieces of Elsie’s life to mine. The only real problem I had with this book was at the very end. All of the buildup was demolished by two sentences. I personally hated Elsie’s final decision, making it hard for me to get over it. Overall, the voice was very good- I could definitely picture myself as Elsie. I would recommend this book to a middle-school aged person (or possibly a freshman) who enjoys music, especially with a passion, just like Elsie. That way, they could relate to her just like I did.
review 2: This book is about a girl who enrolls in marching band so she can get into a high level music camp. However, in the band she has to learn to play a new instrument, and she also meets new people and expands her social life, because before that she spent all of her time practicing. She realizes that marching band is a lot of fun and questions her musical priorities. I don't really recommend this book. less
