review 1: This is a fun book that can be slightly relateable to kids around middle school age. It's a story about a girl discovering who she is in a really quirky family. Her little sister is a genius, her parents are obsessed with Shakespeare, and she's stuck named after The Prince of Denmark himself. She winds up going through a lot of things that a lot of people go through. First crushes. People who are mean to you just because they can be. Anxiety inducing moments especially those involved with her parents showing up at school or with her getting called up to the office. Needing help with a school subject. Helping her sister realise that her friends aren't really her friends and are just using her (which for her and everyone I know--including myself-- is a really hard thing to hea... morer and acknowledge). All of it part of the growing up experience in America. All in all it's a nice light-hearted story that people can relate to and is nice to read in between heavier material type books.
review 2: One of my favorite books by Erin Dionne! The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet has everything- boy drama, mean girl drama, wanting to fit in, sibling problems, "parents don't understand me" concept, and of course Shakespeare!PROS: First of all, I have to say I love this cover! It captured my attention really quickly. Hamlet Kennedy (the main character) had so much stuff happening to her that I felt bad. When an author can make you "feel" something, they have done their job! When Hamlet and her parents had an argument, I rooted for Hamlet because I knew the pressure put on her by her parents. Her parents! They're another story! Hamlet's parents are Shakespeare lovers, and they dress as if they were from that era. Teens feel embarrassed by their parents quite a lot, but Hamlet's parents were beyond embarrassing. In the end though, the author did quite a good job explaining the parents reasons for the way they were. I thought the boy drama was pretty okay. It wasn't over the top, but it wasn't "ant size" either. Erin Dionne made Hamlet and her world come to life.CONS: It was kind of hard for me to imagine a 7 year old have an IQ so brilliant that she was a "genius, genius". Erin Dionne probably could have expanded on that, but other than that, there wasn't much to dislike. This book is something I would recommend for everyone! less
