review 1: Ernessa T. Carter's writing is so good. That is what kept me reading as I started this, because I had a really hard time getting into this. It jumps around four girlfriends, and it has a ton of annoying (but soon to make sense) back story to wade through before anything actually happens. But then suddenly I was so into this and involved in the lives of these women and I have to say there were some actual surprises in here that really made this book shine. It was long too, but not in a bad way. It took me a really long time to read this, but I enjoyed it. It made me want to pick up the author's first book 32 Candles that I remember really enjoying as well.
review 2: I had high hopes for this book and checked constantly for its release. Since it seemed the releas
... moree was delayed a couple times. I completely loved Ms. Carter's debut novel but this one was a big disappointment. I could barely get through the first few chapters which seemed to meander, flatten and drag so much that I could not get into it. I also was not into the whole Terry Mcmillian theme which resonated 10-15 years ago but a new age of african american chick lit was needed and I thought Ms. Carter had tapped into this. Unfortunately I gave up and stopped reading the book. Having tried to stick to it considering some readers reviews had noted the story picked up later , but for me it never did.I wish Ms. Carter would of stuck to her original style of writing and creating stories since this book did not reflect the great talent I had found in the hidden jewel of her 1st book (16 Candles). Sixteen Candles was so acridly sweet, sincere, hopeful and realistic that I wished this one would extend Ms. Carter's place in good or even great chick lit and or Adult fiction which I know she deserves. Her former story gave us a voice reminiscent of the modern AA female authors that thematically would show tragedy and courageousness well (aka Toni Morrison and alice walker) but was never light and whimsical with gyrations of love like the voice Ms Carter had distinguished herself with in her debut novel. I will definitely look for Ms. Carter's next book but hope there will be no trepidation on either of our parts with its appeal. less
