review 1: I didn't like this as much as The Somnambulist. Honestly, I nearly quit reading this half-way through. I'm not sure why I found it so hard to get through, but in the middle I just felt so depressed about it. Yes, I know life was often horrible for women in Victorian England, and it is great to have books exploring the issues, but man. So depressing. I am glad I finished it, though. Things improved by the end.
review 2: I didn't enjoy this as much as her previous book. The beginning was confusing, I almost gave up on it which is rare for me. But I ploughed on & the middle was good but then the ending lost it's way. Although I found myself interested in the asylum bits, "Elijah's Mermaid" paled in comparison to the last book I read which happened to be about the ... moresame subject matter (Painted Bridge - much much better). less
