review 1: Although I did enjoy this book, there were sections of it that could have been written better. The rape scene was shocking but the atmosphere was lost. there were nuances of connections that I couldn't quite grasp and then others that smashed you in the face! Phoebe was an interesting character and the race riots against the Jews in London were almost glossed over as well. On the whole I would recommend the book but the quality could have been better.

... moreait 'The Somnambulist' yet manages to weave an intricate story around these topics without losing the reader! It is essentially a gothic tale in a similar vein to Bronte(particularly Jane Eyre) and Wilkie Collins yet the author manages to make it fresh and totally readable- I couldn't put it down and look forward to reading this author's other novel. less
