Title: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Author: Jennifer E. Smith
Date Started: December 19
Date Finished: December 26
Format: Kindle book from my collection
Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything? Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan’s life. Having missed her flight, she’s stuck at JFK airport and late to her father’s second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley’s never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s sitting in her row. A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival. Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?
So years ago…I’m thinking back in 2009?…I picked up this book from the new release shelf at my local library and was intrigued. Not only because of the cover, but because of the summary of the book. It sounded interesting. But, I must have been on the beginnings of a reading slump because when I picked it up and began to read, I didn’t get past the first chapter. I instantly closed the book and tossed it back into my library book bag. Flash forward to 2013 when I picked up another Smith novel and loved it to pieces, picked up another and loved that one, and I decided to add Probability back onto my TBR shelf and give it another go.
I’m really glad I did. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s that time of year, or because I’m reading a really heavy book at the same time, but this book made me smile a lot. I loved the idea of meeting someone by chance at the airport. And really that was the overall theme of the book, chance. She just happens to miss her flight to England by four minutes. She just happens to meet a guy in the terminal who just so happens to be on her new flight. And who happens to also be in the same row. It goes on like that for a while, and really it wasn’t all that annoying as I’m making it out to be. I wish it would have happened to me on my flight to Vegas earlier this year.
Final Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. As much as I loved the characters and the whole luck aspect of this novel, I’m not sure if I liked the fact that Oliver wasn’t going to a wedding, but his father’s funeral. And yeah, it turns out the dad was a real class a jerk, but still…
