review 1: Talk about unusual. Arson has a gift / curse: he can start fires with his mind. But this is much more than a paranormal story. Estevan Vega pulls you into the secrets of his family, and they are dark. It was fascinating to be part of his life, especially as he gets to know his neighbor, a girl who wears a mask. The ending was dramatic and unexpected and sets the scene beautifully for the next book. I did find that some of the scenes could’ve been tightened up, especially the dialogue, and those slowed the story down. Plus the scenes with the neighbor’s mother didn’t really add to the story and distracted from the main flow, at least for me. With a bit of editing, spit and polish, this could be a 4 star. I’d still recommend it though, if for only the dark, brooding ... moresense of mystery it creates.
review 2: This book will make you cringe. It was so hard for me to get through the first half because the characters were so dark, even slightly psychotic. The story, however, is compelling. I needed to find out what would become of Arson, would he turn into the kind of character you root for? In the end he kind of did but at the same time the author showed the shades of grey, how do you define a true hero? Is it that easy to become one? I guess I kept reading because it was like a train wreck, you just can't look away. Yet at the end I was glad I had read the story because it actually made me think. This book is not some YA fluff piece (which I do enjoy, and tend to reread to swoon over the hotties) so don't expect that. Go into it knowing its deeper and enjoy it for what it is. I do look forward to the sequel but I know I will need to read it when I'm in the right "mood". less
