review 1: This is a thought provoking book about the making sense of the horrors that unfolded in World War II. In modern day New York, Daniel's grandfather tells him the story of how he survived the Warsaw Ghetto and became know as the 'Puppet Boy'. It was Mika's grandfather who created a puppet troupe that Mika used to lighten and entertain the inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto. When he is detained by the German soldier, Max, he is compelled to entertain Nazi soldiers outside of the ghetto. He steps into the role of people smuggler and struggles to come to terms with the situation. It is this same German who tries to save Mika and his mother, and in return receives Mika's precious prince puppet. Mika survives and finds his way to New York, while the German is taken by the Russi... moreans and endures thirteen years in Siberia and walking back to his family near Nuremberg. The soldier has difficulty making sense of the War, his family and the world he now must live in. It is his grand daughter to whom he gives the prince puppet that draws the stories together in the end.I enjoyed the book, but would have liked less tell and more show in the writing. I became a little irritated by the authorial voice on occasion, but I found Max's story particularly compelling as this German soldier, who had helped eradicate the Jews of Poland and then himself was interred in dire circumstances in Siberia, struggled to live a normal life again.
review 2: Thank you for the free copy of this book. Although the subject matter was predictably harrowing, I really enjoyed the story. Of course I had known about the Warsaw ghetto but had not really studied this slice of history in any detail. While this was fictional it was thought provoking on many levels and the author had at her disposal any number of stories and characters to develop. She is a skilled storyteller and certainly knows how to hold her audience. I would welcome more from this author and would happily recommend this book.y less

I've not read a WW2 story before from both sides. Well written and thought provoking.
