review 1: I thought this was a very interesting read. Evan Thomas has a knack for finding interesting national security topics and breaking them down in an easily accessible fashion. I have read other books by him and think this is one of his best. It certainly offered a different perspective of Eisenhower as a president, mainly that he was not who we thought he was, which was a president that didn't do much and just played golf all the time. I think this book shows how much of a master strategist Eisenhower actually was and history will judge him better for the 8 years of peace and prosperity that he oversaw during his tenure.
review 2: Ike was president when I was in elementary school; I remember him mostly as being a grandfather-type who was extremely well respected,
... more His level of skill did not register with me until reading this book -- he was definitely the best man for the job, especially with the evil stalin still alive when Ike took office. The US and USSR could so easily have ended up in a nuclear conflict, but did not because Pres. Eisenhower knew NOT to listen to the US military and NOT to misunderestimate the Russians. How thin this fine line was, JFK soon found out. I have an "I like Ike" campaign button that my folks gave me. less

Portrays Ike as a great card player who used his bluffing skills in politics to forward his agenda.
