The 1971 American League home run champ, ‘Beltin’ Bill hit 160 home runs in his 10-year major league career. Melton came up with the Chicago White Sox in 1968 and was the team’s starting third baseman the next season. He blasted 33 home runs in 1970, compiling a career-high 96 RBI in the process, then hit 33 more in 1971 which was good enough to win the home run title. Injuries limited Melton to just 57 games the next season and by 1976 he had been traded to the California Angels. He spent one year with the Halos and one with the Cleveland Indians before retiring in 1977.
As he notes, Melton was the first White Sox player to lead the league in home runs. When he retired, he was the team’s all-time leader in home runs. He currently ranks eighth on that list.
