review 1: For anyone who loved Little Women this story reveals the true and unexpected origins of many of Louisa's characters and plot points. The life of the Alcott's was far less cozy and comfortable than that of the March's, but that only makes them and Marmee and Lousia especially all the more fascinating. Despite the hardship they faced, this book maintains the hopeful spirit of Little Women and Lousia's other works. It also makes me very curious to explore her adult stories, which she considered her true writing despite the fame she garnered from children's storybooks and novels. This is a fast read and a good one!
review 2: Loved it. It is an excellent and well detailed biography of Louisa and Abigail Alcott. This book is also very information in its exposition o
... moref the times in which these women lived, with the rise of the abolitionist movement at the beginning of the 19th Century and the women's rights issues to which both Louisa and Abigail were devoted. It will also be revealed that the Freethinker, philosopher Bronson Alcott, Louisa's father, was a terrible husband and a lazy poor provider for his family. (You will note how absent the March father is in her famous book, LITTLE WOMEN. This biography puts many of Alcott's literary choices in her novel into perspective.) You will NOT come away from MARMEE AND LOUISA liking this man at all. The book was written by a cousin of Louisa May Alcott, Eva La Plante, who discovered letters and journals once thought to have been purposefully destroyed by Louisa May Alcott. Fascinating stuff to read, especially if you ever read and loved LITTLE WOMEN. less

Thoroughly enjoying this after reading the letters so Abigail Alcott in 'The Boundless Heart.'

The parallels are astonishing-- obviously, Ilse needs to start calling me Marmee right away.
