review 1: i really wanted to like this, but i couldn't get over the issues. It has some great things going for it, including the non stereotypical gender roles and some cool characters and magic systems. However, there was no world building. like none. Nothing was explained and the reader is left to gather the tidbits as one reads, which is fine if it is done right. This however, had no flow and did not serve the development of the plot by keeping the basic world building a secret.
review 2: Most authors shy away from having so many main characters for fear of losing the interest of readers or lack of skill in creating so many unique voices. This was skillfully done though. Each character was well developed, and the interwoven stories were gracefully written in such a wa... morey that not only did I not lose track of who was who, I was drawn even deeper into the overall story by following the various perspectives. Overall this book was a joy to read and had one of the best first book in series endings I've come across. less
