Lean on Pete ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

Lonely teenager Charley bonds with horse ‘Lean on Pete’, embarking on an emotional journey across America’s Northwest.

The latest movie from director Andrew Haigh demonstrates his versatility, but after the brilliance of both Weekend and 45 years, it comes as a slight disappointment.

The flaws may exist in the original source material. A certain flatness in the central section of the movie or a lack of narrative drive.

At the same time there is still much to admire. Great cinematography and an achingly well-played central performance from Charlie Plummer.

As an exploration of a forgotten underclass of the States, it’s of interest, but I wasn’t as moved as I hoped – and perhaps it’s in this regard it didn’t impress as much as I hoped it would.
