review 1: Aliya, an Indian-American Muslim tween, is challenged by the presence of a new Muslim girl at her school, some insensitive classmates, and her own religious school assignment to write about something that makes her grow more mature. As she tells her story (complete with letters to Allah), her blind spots reveal themselves to the reader quickly, whether they are about bigotry or her own halfhearted practice. Her growing friendship with the new girl helps her expand her horizons and she becomes a better person by the end. Good story, if a little predictable. Solid characters all around, but there is nothing really ground-breaking here.
review 2: Aliya is a fifth grader who lives in New England with her extended Muslim family. Her parents are religious but not
... more strictly observant. Her religion teacher challenges her to be more reflective about Islam and over the next few months, Aliya writes letters to Allah. Until Marwa arrives, Aliya has been the only Muslim at school. Marwa wears a hijab, something Aliya wears only to mosque. Gentle, humorous, sometimes overly instructive, but an important addition to school and public libraries regardless of Muslim population. less

2-1/2. Story is not too exciting- but it is rare to have a muslin protagonist
