review 1: It took me forever to read this book. Part of it was my schedule with work and classes that got overwhelming and part of it was I realized after putting it down that I didn't have a burning desire to pick it up again. The writing wasn't bad and I liked the historical information on the period and the suffragettes. It just wasn't particularly engaging either. The characters were a bit flat for me, not particularly one dimensional but not particularly interesting either. It was just one of those things were the blurb sounded completely up my alley but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.
review 2: Although obviously well researched and probably historically accurate I didn't particularly enjoy this one. It was a little too accurate and descriptive of events that
... more I found disturbing such as the forced feeding. Also I didn't like most of the characters. Dody was ok but her sister Florence was irritating and selfish and stupid. I wanted to like her more as her cause was very important but none of the characters from the suffragates to the police to the Irish rebels were likeable. And while I didn't dislike Pike I didn't particularly like him much either. Again while this may be a more realistic and accurate portrayal I want to like and care about the characters I am reading about. I also thought having that particular person be responsible for the murder was a little ridiculous. less
