review 1: I nearly gave up on this book several times but I persevered in the hope it would get better. It didn't! My main issue was that I simply didn't relate to any of the characters and none of them were likeable. A newly divorced woman (Marie) living in the 'old money' area of Mosman, suddenly finds the urge to tattoo herself as a way of exploring her life and her role. One one hand her desire for tattoing is to be controversial, to flaunt it in the face of the upper class 'ladies'. But Marie is having to sell her home and she is an avid gardener. I feel the tattoing of various animals and plants was her way to take her garden with her. Some in my bookclub condemned Marie for being self indulgent and she should just 'strap on her big girls pants and get on with it". But this bo... moreok highlights how every individual responds differently to crises in their life. In some ways, I found Marie courageous. But the novel was filled to overflowing with every drama imaginable - drug use, broken marriages, infidelity, bankruptcy, a homosexual child, infertility, obesity and I could go on. Overkill!
review 2: This book had so much potential, but sadly wasted. The main character should have been focused on more. There were so many side stories about things that didn't add to the story. Her family were important but too much of the book was based around them and their everyday lives. This book was really long, a good editor could have cut about 100 pages, tightened the whole thing up and turned it into a good novel. Disappointed less

The blurb on the back of the book promised so much and it ended up being such a disappointment.

Just couldn't get into it. I found it too boring and reading it became a chore.
