review 1: I'm giving it 2 stars because it held my attention long enough to finish it, and I was interested in the historical events that unfolded along with the war. Such as the suffragettes and the train crash. The characters were not likable, or very believable to me.they contradicted their own values and ideals so quickly it didn't seem plausible. It had all the elements of the types of books I love, but it just wasn't a great read for me. Maybe other people like this style of writing but the constant alluding to something that happened and then leaving the reader to figure out what has happened. I'm not sure what this literary device is called, but I found it annoying. Stories that unfold and are told with rich detail, characters that I can understand or empathize with, history... more woven in, that's what I prefer.
review 2: I don't even know how you manage to make the suffrage movement boring, but somehow Frances Osborne has managed so um, bravo? I came so close to giving up on this several times and I really wish I had. The writing style is very awkward, I think in a misguided attempt to make it seem 'literary'. It doesn't work, it just means some passages have to be reread to make sense of them. I think the literary pretensions are why it has such a clumsy ending too. It's like she thought 'those clever writers don't end everything neatly so neither will I', but sadly she doesn't have anything approaching the skill to carry it off. less
