review 1: This novel was beautifully written, and the connection to Homer's ODYSSEY was a plus; I love adaptations of ancient literature. I'll confess, though, that I found the book rather odd. I read it expecting it to be "cli-fi" (climate-related fiction), and it was, sort of; at least, the precipitating event was a massive earthquake/flood presumably brought on by climate change. But after that incident, the story delved way beyond climate (and realism) by plunging the heroine into a world of genetically-engineered giants, monstrous creatures straight from Homer, and magical occurrences and coincidences. I personally found it hard to decide what I was reading: a drama about environmental disaster and science gone wrong, or a lyrical fantasy with little connection to the real worl... mored. Maybe it was both. At the very least, this was an interesting experiment, and lovers of well-crafted, literary YA will find it an engaging read.
review 2: This book is the prose equivalent of a sugar overdose. It's so drippy that it makes you teeth hurt, and your bones shake, and your small intestine quiver with emotion. It's melodramatic, and weepy and it's like watching mythological soap opera and I have to admit that I utterly adored it. It could be because it combined three of my favorite things, art history, greek mythology, and dystopias into one, or that the prose was like walking through an incense shop where every smell is getting a whiff of overwhelming comfort. It felt like a book carefully molded for me, from the artistic and distant characters, the confusing yet beautiful world, and the deconstruction and modernization of the myths. It's by no means a perfect book, but it is one I deeply enjoyed. 4 1/2 stars. less

To me- this whole book was a hot mess but that ending saved it all. The ending was impeccable!

Didn't love it. It was sort of all over the place and confusing. Not really my style.
