review 1: A witty and elegantly written novel. This is the story of Lula, an illegal Albanian immigrant who is a born survivor with irresistible romantic cravings. The story focuses on her relationship with her new American friends (her employer Mister Stanley, his son Zeke and her lawyer Don Settebello) as well as with a trio of Albanian thugs. Prose is very good at describing the contradictory feelings Lula harbors towards her Albanian roots and her new country. There is not a dull moment in the book, and under the sarcastic comments there is always compassion for all the characters.
review 2: This is great satire, and I'd give it a 3.5 for its writing. Lula is a young woman from Albania who is working in NJ (metro NYC area)as a companion to a rebellious teenager. Hi
... mores mother has taken off and is likely mentally ill and his father is a sad sack who can't seem to find happiness. The father's best friend is a successful immigration attorney so he's enlisted to help Lula get her green card. Meanwhile, the attorney decides to take on the seemingly lost causes of innocent people who have ended up at Gitmo and who are subjected to torture, a.k.a. enhanced interrogation techniques. Inserted into all of this are three Albanian men who ask Lula to hide a gun in the house. She worries it's been used in a crime, but develops a crush on one of them so asks no questions. Lula's life is a wild ride, complete with lies and fictional accounts of her life in Albania. The book is liberally sprinkled with anti-Bush and Cheney sentiments so be forewarned if your politics differ. For me the book shows, in a humorous way, a lot of what's right--and what's wrong--about Americans and humans in general. less
